Anergic T cells as active regulators of the immune response

T cell anergy is one of the mechanisms leading to the establishment and maintenance of
peripheral tolerance. Recent data from our and other laboratories indicate that anergic T
cells are not functionally inert but in fact are capable of regulating the immune response in
an active manner. In this review, we describe our viewpoint on how anergic self-reactive T
cells could contribute to regulation of the immune response.
