Since there is a growing awareness ofthe possibility that the activation of mast cells is an
important ingredient in the pathogenesis ofscleroderma, this chapter will review the
relationships between mast cells and fibrotic processes and develop an integrated
schemafor the pathogenesis of scleroderma in which mast cells, endothelial cells, and
fibroblasts all play important roles.
